Levický hrad

History Levice Castle

The preserved ruins of the Gothic castle are the dominant feature of the town of Levice. This stone castle from the end of the 13th century was built on a strategically well-protected location at the end of the Štiavnica Mountains. The preserved part of the castle, the Captain's House, houses the Tekov Museum. There are exhibitions and a concert hall. There are several legends and stories connected with the castle. If you want to get to know them, be sure to visit the castle.

History Zobor Monastery

Historically the oldest known monastery in Slovakia was founded in the 9th century on the western slope of the Zobor hill. It is rightly referred to as an underrated treasure. Between the 11th and the 14th century, the Benedictine Monastery of St. Hypolytus fulfilled an important function as a religious, public and cultural centre. The oldest and most valuable written documents from our territory - the Zobor Documents, dating from 1111 and 1113 - are also connected to the monastery. Thanks to a mobile application and 3D augmented reality technology, you can see the ancient form of the Zobor monastery and listen to a narration about it. You can also get a glimpse into the dwelling and life of a Camaldolese monk.

History Nitra Castle

Nitra Castle is the central landmark of the oldest Slovak town Nitra. It was built on the site of a Slavic hillfort, the seat of the Nitra princes and the Great Moravian rulers. Today it is the seat of the Nitra bishopric. Enter the enchanting Cathedral of St. Emeram, the casemates, the Vazula Tower or discover the treasures in the Diocesan Museum. During the summer season, enjoy a movie or an open-air concert in the Gothic moat. In the Upper Town, romantic streets, mysterious corners and a charming atmosphere await you, where the Middle Ages breathe upon you. Here you will find the statue of Atlante, popularly known as the Corgon, the statue of Prince Pribina, the Great and Small Seminaries and the precious Diocesan Library.

In the forests above the village of Nitrianska Blatnica you will find a chapel - the rotunda of St. George from the 9th - 10th century. For several centuries (probably since the second half of the 16th century), St. George's pilgrimages have been held there every April, and people from the surrounding area familiarly call it "Jurko", "Ďurko" or "Rotunda Jurko". It was only archaeological research in the 1970s that revealed that the history of the rotunda dates back to the 9th century and was not built in the 16th century, as was erroneously assumed until then. Guided tours of the rotunda are available every Saturday.

Slovak Pompeii, this is also how the Valy fortress in the village of Bojná could be described. One of the most important archaeological sites in Central Europe and the largest Slavic archaeological site in Slovakia. The Valy fortress is a reconstruction of a Slavic settlement directly in nature. In the 9th century it was an important fortified power centre, situated on the trade route between Ponitrie and Považie, where the inhabitants embraced Christianity even before the arrival of St. Cyril and Methodius. You can also visit reconstructions of Slavic dwellings or a defensive wall. Valy fortress is freely accessible all year round. On Saturdays during summer season you can take a guided tour of the fortress and learn more about Slavic history. History Roman camp Kelemantia in Iža

A memento of the presence of the Roman legions on our territory can also be found on the banks of the Danube near the village of Iža, just 7 km east of Komárno. The Roman military fortress of Kelemantia was built in the 2nd century and was part of the Limes Romanus defensive line securing the borders of the Roman Empire against barbarian invasions. The camp occupied an area of more than 3 hectares and was surrounded by double moats, earthen ramparts and a wooden defensive wall. In the 4th century, the fortress was devastated by the barbarians and today its grounds have been converted into an open-air museum. Here you can see parts of the original and reconstructed buildings.

History Kolárovo Ship Mill

On the dead arm of the river Little Danube in Kolárovo is the last example of a floating mill and the only ship mill in Slovakia. It is a working replica of the water mill in Radvaň nad Dunajom, which burnt down in 1945 under mysterious circumstances. Nowadays, the building of the boat mill is used as a museum of water milling. A unique wooden bridge leads to the mill. The all-wooden colonnade pedestrian bridge is 86 m long and is one of the longest all-wooden covered bridges in Europe.

History Gýmeš Castle

A popular place for hikes, excursions and cycling tours. The ruins of Gýmeš Castle rise majestically at a height of 514 m on the hill Dúňl above the village of Jelenec. Despite the fact that the Turks conquered and damaged the castle, it was inhabited until 1865. Hiking trails lead to the castle from the village of Jedľové Kostoľany or the recreation centre Jelenec - Remitáž. There are also many cycling routes leading to the ruins. It is said that guests were welcomed to the castle by the so-called shovel dance. The guest received four blows with a shovel and only then was he entered into the guest book. Visit the castle and see if this story is true.

Like many others, Oponický Castle was built in the 13th century as a guard castle for the protection of Nitra. It was one of the few castles that withstood the invasions of the Turks. The castle was seriously damaged by imperial troops in the 18th century. The ruins of the castle, surrounded by forest and with a beautiful view of the surroundings, are now a popular destination for excursions. The path to the castle is easy and can be easily managed by all ages. The marked trail leads directly from the village of Oponice.

Do not let the name fool you. You would look in vain for Topoľčany Castle in Topoľčany. It is located above the village of Podhradie about 16 km from Topoľčany. The romantic ruin dominates one of the rocky outcrops of Považský Inovec and from the castle tower offers beautiful views of Ponitrie, the ridges of Tríbeč, Vtáčnik and Považský Inovec. In the interior of the prismatic tower you will also find a small exposition on the history of the castle. The ascent to the castle is a pleasant walk for all ages.

At the northern end of the village of Topoľčianky, picturesquely set in a romantic English park, there is a Classicist manor house. It stands on the site of the original Gothic castle and Renaissance fortress. In the past it was the summer residence of the Habsburgs, after the World War I. it served as a presidential summer resort. It was also a favourite place of the first president of the Czechoslovak Republic, T. G. Masaryk. There is a museum in the classicist wing. Visitors can admire the rich library with over 14 thousand volumes, the period interior, rare furniture, pictorial decoration and collections of ceramics and porcelain.

The largest thermal swimming pool in Slovakia in the town with the most sunny days in the year offers thousands of experiences all year round. In the oak forests near Topoľčany you have a unique opportunity to see the European bison - the largest European mammal, a relative of the American bison. The bison menagerie is the only place in Slovakia where you can see it. The bison was once a natural part of European forests and was also found on our territory, even as late as the nineteenth century. Today it is listed in the Red List of Threatened Species. Seeing this majestic mammal is an experience for both, the young and the old, too.

Both experienced and inexperienced fishermen can relax while fishing. They will even prepare a tasty meal from your catch in the local restaurant overlooking the pond. Children can try horseback riding, have fun on the climbing frame, swings or trampoline, or play sports on one of the playgrounds. If one day is not enough, you can also stay on site.

Nature Arboretum Mlyňany

The arboretum is located in the village of Vieska nad Žitavou on an area of 67 hectares. It was founded in 1892 by the Hungarian nobleman Dr. Štefan Ambrózy-Migazzi. You will find more than 2300 species of rare foreign trees there. Thanks to its range of cultivated exotic trees, it is one of the largest arboretums in Central Europe. In the middle of the arboretum is a romantic manor house. The whole area consists of five themed parts and its own nursery where you can buy the grown trees and flowers. The core of the park consists of the Ambrózy Park with an area of 40 hectares, which is its oldest part. The main sightseeing route measures 4.5 km and leads through Ambrózy Park, the North American and East Asian sections. Part of the arboretum is also dedicated to Slovakia and the part from the entrance to the mansion is dedicated to flowers and rosemary.

Nature National Stud Topoľčianky

The National Stud Farm is one of the important European breeding and breeding centres of noble warm-blooded horses. The stud farm was founded in 1921. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only place in Europe where five breeds of horses are bred. The centre of the stud farm is the historic riding arena built in 1910. Part of the stud's facilities is located in the grounds of the famous Topoľčany Castle. Part of the complex is also a hipological exhibition with exhibits that will attract both the general public and professionals. Outside of Slovakia, the stud farm is mainly known for its four-oared and classical school with Lipizzaner stallions. Horses from Topoľčianky are successful not only at domestic but also foreign sport events. The offer of sports, breeding and cultural and social events organized in the stud is really rich.
