About Levice Castle
Levice Castle is a ruined Gothic castle near the centre of Levice in the Nitra Region. Built in the second half of the 13th century, it guarded the southern approach to the mining towns of central Slovakia. Its position on a rocky outcrop surrounded by marshland gave it a strategic advantage.
The earliest written record of the castle dates from 1318, when it belonged to Matthew Csák of Trenčín. Between 1388 and 1553, it was owned by the Levický family, who built a new palace, now known as the middle castle. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent Renaissance alterations in response to the growing Ottoman threat.
Levice Castle was built as a strategic stronghold to protect the western borders of the Kingdom of Hungary from Ottoman raids. In the 16th century, it played a key role in the wars against the Ottomans, becoming an enduring symbol of resilience and defence. Although Ottoman forces besieged it several times, they never succeeded in fully capturing the castle.
