St George’s Church in Kostoľany pod Tribečom: A treasure of pre-Romanesque architecture
St George’s Church in Kostoľany pod Tribečom is one of Slovakia’s most important examples of pre-Romanesque church architecture.
Discover this remarkable historic church, whose origins date back to the Great Moravian period.
History and architecture
The original church was built in the late 9th or early 10th century. Its simple layout, with a single nave and an irregularly shaped sanctuary, resembles that of other churches from the period, such as the small church in Kopčany.
The church was restored following a fire in the 11th century, and its interior was decorated with wall paintings around 1100. In the 13th century, it was extended with a new nave and a small tower above the gallery. These alterations reflected the growing congregation and coincided with the village passing into the ownership of the Forgách family.
Wall paintings
The church’s interior features rare wall paintings dating from the late 11th and early 12th centuries, among the oldest surviving examples in Slovakia.
The paintings form a Marian cycle depicting scenes such as the Annunciation, the Visitation and the Adoration of the Magi.
These frescoes are significant both for their age and for the technique used to create them – painting onto wet plaster, which was uncommon at the time.
